Our gardens can be incredibly important to us. As living entities, gardens have an abundance of growing plant life, offering a chance for people to relax or play in a nature-filled and safe environment, keeping a garden well-maintained throughout the year is a crucial part of owning one.

However, as autumn gets underway, there are things you can do to keep your garden looking fresh and alive, even during a time when plants and trees seem to shrivel and shed. Let’s take a look at some tips on how to prepare your garden for autumn.

Weeding and seeding

Start by weeding around your garden, whether that be clearing the lawn of unwanted nettles or removing any weeds that are poking through the seams of your patio. Fresh and clean flower beds will help promote growth.

As well as weeding, autumn is the best season for seeding and reseeding the lawn. Post-summer, the soil is warmer, roots actively grow and the rain will return – these are three key elements for lawn growth, whether you’re trying to preserve your old one or starting afresh with a new one.

Put your leaves to work

With a spectrum of reds, ambers, yellows and maroons decorating your trees and floors, autumnal leaves are beautiful. However, when they start to fall more and more, it can be depressing to see empty trees and the leaves can clog up your ground, causing an unsightly mulch or an unsafe slippery surface. Depending on the weather, grab a rake for wet leaves or a leaf blower for dry ones and start to clear them from your lawns or patios.

Instead of just simply disposing them, you can use your leaves in a multitude of ways that can help your garden. For example, you can use them for your compost; ensure they are moist but not wet before mixing them with the rest of the pile and aim turn to the compost once a month. Alternatively, you can break them down to create a leaf mulch which is a great soil conditioner, insulator for plants and vegetables and protects worms from prey.

Fixing up your patio

During the summer, your patio may have become very dry to the point the material sealing them to the ground or sealing the stones together might be starting to crack and come away. Before the heaviest rains start, inspect your patio and identify any areas that may need fixing up.

Also, consider giving your patio a clean, as this will help remove any dust and grime that has built up over the summer. Due to the weather changing, you may want to consider cleaning your patio every few weeks as rain, mulch and mud can make it look unsightly and cause increased damage to it.
